Beetroot pakora brings a vibrant purple to your plate and has tons of nutrients packed into one small recipe. Beetroot pakora can be made in less than 15 minutes. You could serve this pakora as a side dish or snack for kids and elders. You can use the same recipe to make carrot fritters. In this recipe, you can also use grated carrot and beetroot and make carrot beetroot pakora.
You can have beetroot pakora as such or you can serve it with soured cream dip or tomato ketchup.

Besan flour/kadalai mavu – 1/2 cup
Rice flour/arisi mavu – 1/4 cup
Beetroot (grated) – 1 cup
Onion (finely chopped) – 1
Ginger (finely chopped) – 1 tsp
Green chillies (finely chopped) – 2
Red chilli powder – 2 tsp
Cumin seeds/jeeragam – 1 tsp
Hing/asafoetida/perungayam – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 to 2 strands
Baking soda – 1/8 tsp (optional)
Salt – as required
Oil – to deep fry
Note. The ingredients shown will vary with the original quantity.
1. In a mixing bowl, add all the ingredients except oil. Beetroot and onion will leave water, so do not add water. Combine well and if needed, sprinkle few drops of water.2. Set the beetroot mixture aside. Meantime, heat oil in medium to high flame for deep frying the pakoras. Pinch small pieces of the beetroot mixture and drop it gently to the hot oil.3. Fry until pakoras turn crispy, and then drain them on a tissue paper.Now, beetroot pakora is ready! Serve it with hot tea.
- Instead of beetroot, you can make carrot pakoras.
