Onam, a festival celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout Kerala, is around the corner. The recipes that can be made for Sadya are sambaram, beans mezhukupuratti, mambazha pulissery, ladies finger pulissery, pumpkin pulissery, banana fritters, vermicelli kheer, moong dal kheer, naaran kavum, cabbage thoran, nendran chips, cucumber pulissery, milk kheer and green moong dal kheer.
Right from my childhood days, I have celebrated onam festival and enjoyed sadya celebration with my friends. They either invite me to be part of their celebration or bring the dishes over to my house. I like the way they serve the dishes traditionally on a banana leaf. Even just looking at Sadya is a feast to my eyes.
My school celebrated onam festival with tremendous zeal by explaining its history and spiritual significance. We sing, dance and enact plays depicting the festival. I still remember those delightful moments where I danced for a boat song, fishermen songs, harvest songs etc. We would not have classes for two days because of the dance practices and celebration. Some teachers would wear white half saree for the celebration. Lovely moments!
Onam festival is truely the pride and joy of the people of Kerala. Next year, I will have some more recipes added to my onam sadya collection. Meantime, enjoy my sadya collection!
