Purple cabbage kootu. An easy and tasty kootu made with moong dal, purple cabbage and basic seasonings. Purple cabbage kootu makes a great lunch when served with steamed rice and papad.
Purple cabbage kootu is similar to the regular cabbage kootu. Only difference is the color of the cabbage. Though the cabbage has a vibrant purple color, once it is cooked, it will lack its vibrant color. Nevertheless, the kootu will taste delicious just like our traditional cabbage kootu.

Purple cabbage (chopped) – 1 cup
Yellow split moong dal/pasi paruppu – 1/4 cup
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida/hing/perungayam – 1/4 tsp
Salt – as required
Channa dal/kadalai paruppu – 1 tsp
Coriander seeds/daniya – 2 tsp
Peppercorns/milagu – 10
Cumin seeds/seeragam – 1/4 tsp
Coconut (grated) – 1 tbsp.
Red chillies – 2
Oil – 1 tbsp.
Mustard seeds/kadugu – 1/4 tsp
Urad dal/ulutham paruppu – 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Note. The ingredients shown will vary with the original quantity.
1. In a pan, bring a cup of water to boil. Add washed moong dal and cook until it is 3/4th done. Meantime, chop the purple cabbage and set aside.2. When moong dal is almost cooked, add purple cabbage. Give a quick stir and cook until purple cabbage and moong dal are combined well. 3. In a mixer, add ingredients listed under “To grind”. Without adding water, grind it smoothly. When both purple cabbage and moong dal are cooked, add the ground powder.4. Stir well and cook until the kootu thickens. Meantime, heat oil in a small pan and let the mustard seeds splutter. Then add urad dal and curry leaves. Once urad dal turns golden brown, switch off.
5. Add the seasoning to the kootu and give a quick stir. Cook for a minute and then switch off.Now, purple cabbage kootu is ready! Serve it with steamed rice.
