Ramadan Recipes for Iftar – Collection of Ramadan Recipes for Iftar
Ramadan Recipes – Ramadan, the holy month is here. In my Ramadan Nombu Kanji post, I mentioned how happy I would be at the time of Ramzan. In this post, I would like to write a little about Ramadan and Ramadan Recipes.
I called my childhood friend Farida who gave me a detailed explanation about fasting. Time to thank Faritha for the wonderful and elaborate explanation.
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and falls at a different time each year. During Ramadan, faithful observers of Islam fast all day long from sunrise to sunset. During the fast, they would not consume food or drink. Followers of Islam believe that fasting will hep them to learn patience, self-control and embrace modesty and spirituality. Also, their thoughts must be pure.
Is Fasting For Everyone?
I asked Faritha if everyone has to fast all day long during this month. She said not necessarily. Pregnant woman, new mother, elder, sick and mentally ill people could exempt from fasting. Instead of fasting, they would do good deeds like helping or feeding the less fortunate.
What Kind of Fasting Is It?
During Ramadan, two main meals are served: the Suhoor, served before dawn, and the Iftar, which is served after sunset. In between Suhoor and Iftar is the time when they fast so Ramadan meals would be served before sunrise and after sunset and eaten with family or neighbors.
Fasting starts with Suhoor that lasts throughout the day, so the meal has to be heavy and hearty: starting from a simple meal of dates (Chocolate Date Balls), bananas, avocados (Guacamole), milk to heavy meals like omelets (Egg Omelette), cheese, yoghurt, porridge, and food rich in carbohydrates. The food that you eat should help you to sustain fasting throughout the day. Also the food should be able to digest slowly and provide a lot of energy. When I googled to see what kind of simple food one could have, I came across bananas, dates, nuts, avocados, eggs etc. At the end of the day, fast is broken with Iftar meals.
Faritha said sweets such as fruit juice, dates and fruits are a perfect fast-breaking food. Usually, dates is the first food that is eaten to break the fast, though not compulsory. Sweets tend to elevate low sugar levels in the body after a day of fasting. She also said after a long day fast, it would be best to have brunch because it keeps your dusk meal light. It could be samosas, soups, chaat items, sandwiches, noodles, fried rice etc. Though my friend Faritha does not consume soup, my other friend Ayeesha has soup everyday for Iftar. She told me long time back that soup would help to just warm up the digestive system after a day long fast. Just thought I will share it here.
At the end of the Ramadan month, they celebrate the Festival called Eid al-Fitr (Festival of the Breaking of the Fast).
When it comes to food, both of the suhoor and iftar meals contain fresh fruit, vegetables, halal meats, breads, cheeses, and sweets. Followers of Islam are all over the world, so they would eat quite a variety of food. Though Ramadan is not all about food, still it is a time when dishes are shared and appreciated. I guess this fasting helps to cultivate a healthy lifestyle, so that they can follow this throughout their life. Also, this would be the better time for them to change their personality and know their inner self.
For those observing the fast,
- please drink water for every 2 hours to restore water level in your body
- please do not forget the person who had fasted and made this food for you. Those souls would be more tired than you are.
I have many readers from Middle East. I compiled the Ramadan Recipes based on what you can have for Suhoor and Iftar.Ohh what a joy to write this post!
My friend Faritha helped me in picking up the recipes. Though I don’t have many dates recipes in my website, I thought I should post some dates recipes at least for next year Ramzan. My friend also suggested me to post some fried rice, sandwich, milkshake and smoothie recipes because brunch would be eaten along with some dessert, milkshake and dates. Thankfully, she explained it to me clearly so I found it useful to compile some Ramadan recipes for Suhoor and Iftar. Hope you all like my collection and find it useful. Try mixing up the recipes and celebrate this holy month.
I wish all my friends and readers a very Happy Ramadan!
