Sorakkai poriyal. A simple and easy south indian poriyal made with sorakkai or bottle gourd that goes well sambar and steamed rice.
Dine in or out, I always love to have a vegetable dish to balance off my meal. Sorakkai poriyal is quite easy to make. All you have to do is saute sorakkai with some spices and garnish with freshly grated coconut. Tastes so good with sambar, rasam or even kuzhambu.
You can make many dishes with sorakkai like bottle gourd kheer, sorakkai kootu, sorakkai pal kootu etc. I will post these recipes one by one pretty soon. Stay tuned!

Sorakkai/bottle gourd (chopped) – 1
Onion (finely chopped) – 1
Green chillies (chopped) – 2
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt – as required
Roasted bengal gram/pottukadalai – 1.5 tbsp
Fennel seeds/sombu – 1/2 tsp
Oil – 1 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Ural dal/ulutham paruppu – 1/4 tsp
Cumin seeds/seeragam – 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida/hing/perungayam – a pinch
Curry leaves – 4 to 5
Note. The ingredients shown will vary with the original quantity.
1. In a mixer, grind roasted bengal gram and fennel seeds to a fine powder. Set aside.2. Heat oil in a pan, and let the mustard seeds splutter. Then add urad dal, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Then add chopped onion, green chillies and salt.3. When onions turn golden brown, add the chopped sorakkai and turmeric powder. Cover with lid and cook for about 5 minutes or until sorakkai turn soft.4. Finally, add the ground bengal gram-fennel powder and mix well. Sprinkle little water. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes or until sorakkai is completely cooked.Now, sorakkai poriyal is ready! Serve it with steamed rice, sambar or kootu.
