Thiruvathirai kali recipe. A sweet dish made with jaggery, raw rice and moong dal is served as a special neivedhyam dish along with thiruvathirai adai for thiruvathirai festival.
For the past three years, I have been trying to post thiruvathirai recipes – kootu, adai and kali. For some reason, it never happened. This year, I was so determined to post all the recipes that are made for thiruvathirai pooja. I had already posted thiruvathirai adai and thiruvathirai kootu, and now am happy to post thiruvathirai kali.

Raw rice/pacharisi – 1 cup
Moong dal/pasi paruppu – 2 tbsp
Jaggery/vellam – 1 cup
Coconut (grated) – 2 tbsp
Cardamom powder/elaikkai powder – a pinch
Ghee – 2 tsp
Cashew nuts (broken) – 4
Water – 1 and 1/2 cup
1. Dry roast raw rice until it turns light golden brown in color. Set aside to cool down.2. Dry roast moong dal until it turns light golden brown in color. Set aside to cool down.3. Transfer moong dal and raw rice to a mixer, and grind it using pulse option just to break the rice and moong dal.4. Pressure cook rice moong dal mixture using 1 and 1/4 water for 2 whistles in medium low flame. Once pressure releases, stir well. The cooked rice moong mixture might look sticky and little dry. Switch off and set aside.5. In a pan, add water and jaggery and bring it to boil. We need water just to dissolve the jaggery. The jaggery should dissolve completely. Set aside.6. Now, strain the jaggery to remove impurities and transfer back to the pan. Fluff the rice moong dal mixture well with a fork.7. Heat a teaspoon of ghee in a small pan, and roast the cashew nuts until golden brown. Set aside.8. Now heat up the jaggery and add the cooked rice moong dal mixture. Stir well and add roasted cashew nuts, grated coconut and cardamom powder. Stir well.9. When the kali comes together to a fluffy mass, add ghee and give a quick stir.Now, thiruvathirai kali is ready!
