Vazhaikkai podimas recipe, plantain stir fry, raw banana stir fry
Vazhaikkai podimas/plantain stir-fry is so easy to make and is big on flavor. Vazhaikkai podimas is humble and homely dish that requires handful of ingredients and you would be done in no time.
I make podimas recipes in rotation. Sometimes, I would make potato podimas, vazhaipoo podimas, egg podimas, radish podimas, tofu podimas, paneer podimas and so on. I love podimas because not only does it taste delicious, but it’s a great way to get a generous serving of a vegetable in one meal.
My mom always made several podimas recipes growing up. Vazhaikkai podimas is one of my favorite podimas recipes and my whole family loved it!

Raw plantain/vazhaikkai – 2 nos.
Onion or small onions (sambar onions) (chopped) – 3/4 cup
Green chillies (chopped) – 3 nos.
Ginger/inji (grated) – 1 tsp
Garlic/poondu (chopped) – 5 cloves
Coconut (grated) – 2 tbsp
Coriander leaves/kothamalli (chopped) – 2 tbsp
Salt – as required
Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds/kadugu – 1/2 tsp
Urad dal/ulutham paruppu – 1/2 tsp
Channa dal/kadalai paruppu – 1/2 tsp
Fennel seeds/saunf/sombu – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves/karuvepillai – 1 strand
Notes. The ingredients shown will vary with the original quantity.
1. Peel the skin of raw plantain. Add them to the boiling water with chopping them. Cook until plantain turns soft, but make sure it does not turn mushy. Switch off and let it cool down.2. Once plantain cools down, grate it using a grater. In a mixing bowl, add the grated plantain and salt. Mix well.3. Heat oil in a pan, and let the mustard seeds splutter. Now add urad dal, channa dal, fennel seeds and curry leaves. Once the dals turn golden brown, add chopped onions. 4. Once onions turn golden brown, add green chillies, garlic, and ginger. Cook for 2 minutes, and then add grated plantain. Give a quick stir and cook for a minute. Switch off.5. Finally, add grated coconut, salt, and chopped coriander leaves. Stir well.Now, vazhaikkai podimas/plantain stir fry is ready! Serve vazhaikkai podimas as an accompaniment to rice.
- You can add chopped small onions or sambar onions instead of regular onions.
- Instead of plantain or raw banana, you can use potatoes, paneer etc.
