Vazhaipoo podimas recipe, banana flower stir fry
You can make podimass with almost all the veggies. I have already posted potato podimas recipe long time back. Now, it is time to post vazhaipoo podimas recipe. Vazhaipoo podimas is one of my favorite poriyal that I make whenever I get vazhaipoo at indian grocery stores. It goes well with sambar, rasam and curd rice.

To roast and grind
Cashews nuts – 13 nos.
Peanuts/verkadalai – 1/2 tbsp
Fennel seeds/sombu – 1 tsp
Cumin seeds/Jeeragam – 1/2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds/vendhayam – 1/4 tsp
Cinnamon – 1/2 inch
Cloves/crambu – 2 nos.
Note. The ingredients shown will vary with the original quantity.
Beginners, if you would like to know how to clean vazhaipoo, then you might refer “how to clean vazhaipoo” post.
1. Dry roast the ingredients given under “To roast and grind” until golden brown. Cool it down completely. Then, grind it to a fine powder and keep it aside.2. Chop the vazhaipoo, and soak it in buttermilk to avoid darkening. Meantime, heat oil and add curry leaves. Then add onions and ginger garlic paste.3. Saute till golden brown and then add turmeric powder, chilli powder and salt. Cook for two minutes. Then drain the buttermilk and add the chopped vazhaipoo. Add little water such that it covers the vazhaipoo and cook covered until the vazhaipoo is cooked.4. Once the vazhaipoo becomes dry, add the ground mixture and give a quick stir. Cook for two more minutes and switch off the stove.Now, vazhaipoo podimas is ready! Serve hot with sambar, rasam, kootu and curd rice.
- At the end, you can also add grated coconut and cook for two more minutes.
- Soak the vazhaipoo in buttermilk to prevent it from browning.
