Tomato kuzhambu recipe, thakkali kuzhambu. An easy and delicious kuzhambu made with ripe tomatoes and few spices.

  • 3 ripe tomatoes chopped
  • 1/2 cup sambar onions, small onions chopped
  • 1 sprig curry leaves, karuvepillai
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds, kadugu
  • salt as required
  • 2 tsp oil

To roast and grind

  • 1 cup onion chopped
  • 3 ripe tomatoes chopped
  • 1 cup coconut grated or chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, poondu whole
  • 1/4 cup coriander powder
  • 6 red chillies, kanja milagai
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, jeeragam
  • 5 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 cinnamon, pattai
  • 1 clove, crambu
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds, kasa kasa
  • 5 tsp oil


  1. Heat oil in a pan and saute onions for two minutes. Then add cumin seeds and coriander seeds. Saute for a minute. Add red chillies, curry leaves, tomatoes and garlic.

  2. When tomatoes turn soft, add coriander powder, cinnamon, clove, and poppy seeds. Saute for a minute.

  3. Add coconut pieces and saute for a minute. Switch off.

  4. Transfer the mixture to a blender, add little water and grind until smooth. Set aside.

  5. Heat oil in a pan, and let the mustard seeds splutter. Add chopped onions and curry leaves. When onions turn transparent, add tomatoes and saute for a minute.

  6. Then add the ground mixture, little water and salt. Stir well and cook for 10 minutes or until the kuzhambu thickens. Now, tomato kuzhambu or thakkali kuzhambu is ready!
