Mango pachadi recipe, mangai pachadi with sugar – A traditional south indian dish made with raw mangoes and sugar prepared especially for tamil new year.

  • 2 cups raw mango sliced into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup onion chopped
  • 1/2 tsp ginger finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup coconut grated (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sugar add more if needed
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder

To season

  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, kadugu
  • 2 to 3 red chillies
  • 2 tsp oil


  1. Heat oil in a pan. Add the mustard seeds and let it splutter. Then add red chillies, chopped onion and grated ginger. Fry onions till it turns light brown.

  2. Then add mango pieces. Cook the mango pieces until tender, and then add 1/2 cup of sugar and little water. Boil well.

  3. Add chilli powder and turmeric powder. Boil till the raw smell goes off.

  4. Then mash it well with a ladle. Cook for two more minutes. If you wish, add grated coconut and cook for a minute and then switch off. Now, manga pachadi is ready! Serve mango pachadi as an accompaniment to rice.
