  • 1 cup aval/poha (thick poha variety)
  • lemon juice (from 1 small lemon)
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp salt

To temper

  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp channa dal
  • 1 no red chillies or green chillies
  • 1 tbsp peanuts
  • a pinch asafoetida
  • 1 sprig curry leaves


  1. Soak aval in water for just 3 minutes. Soak channa dal in water for about 10 minutes.

  2. Heat oil in a pan and let the mustard seeds splutter. Then add urad dal, channa dal, turmeric powder, green chillies, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Mix well.

  3. Add soaked aval and stir gently so that aval gets mixed with the seasoning. Finally, add lemon juice and switch off. 

  4. Roast peanuts in a teaspoon of oil until golden brown and then add it to lemon aval. Give a quick stir.

  5. Now, lemon aval is ready!
